From Production to Community Market: Keeping Economic Value in the Village

For KUMA Tawaang, the future of the village economy cannot stop at the garden.

For years, many people in the village have worked hard as producers. They grow rice, chilli, maize, coconuts, and cloves, raise pigs and fish, and process other local resources. But once the harvest is over, control often moves outside the community. Prices are set by the market. Distribution is controlled by traders. Farmers are left waiting for figures that can change at any time, with little power to influence them.

In this situation, farmers do not necessarily lose because they are unable to produce. They often lose because they do not control what happens after production.

Itulah sebabnya KUMA mulai memikirkan pasar komunitas. That is why KUMA began thinking about a community market.

The community market envisioned by KUMA is not simply a place to sell goods. It is a system designed to keep the results of community labour circulating within the village for longer. Chilli, maize, rice, fish, pigs, coconuts, cloves, crafts, and processed products would not immediately leave the village, but would first help meet the needs of the community itself.

In this way, money does not leave the village so quickly. Residents buy from one another. Local products are used by local families. The results of community labour return to support the community itself. This is what KUMA means by strengthening the circulation of the village economy.

This idea matters because too much of the village economy has long leaked outward. People sell raw materials at low prices and then buy finished products back at higher prices. They produce food yet remain dependent on outside markets. They have land, but do not always control the added value generated from that land.

KUMA ingin belajar mengubah keadaan itu. KUMA wants to learn how to change that situation.

One direction is product processing. Local resources do not always have to be sold in raw form. Cap Tikus, for example, was once processed into hand sanitiser during the COVID-19 pandemic. That experience showed that local knowledge can be developed into value-added products when it is managed safely, responsibly, and according to community needs.

The same approach can be considered for other products. Chilli can be processed into sambal or seasoning products. Maize can be processed into livestock feed or local foods. Rice can be packaged. Crafts can be marketed as cultural products. Fish and pigs can be managed to meet demand during major occasions such as Pengucapan Syukur, Christmas, and New Year.

Ia bukan hanya soal menjual, tetapi membangun sistem. KUMA understands, however, that all of this cannot be done at once. Building a community market requires record-keeping, trust, product quality, division of work, capital, storage space, buyer networks, and shared rules. It is not only about selling; it is about building a system.

This is where KUMA becomes a learning space. Members learn not only how to grow crops or raise livestock, but also how to calculate production costs, estimate harvests, record income and expenses, set fair prices, and think about how products reach buyers.

If this is done consistently, KUMA can become a centre of knowledge about the village economy. It can record when chilli is harvested, how many fish are available, who has pigs ready for sale, how many rice-field plots are being managed, when cloves are harvested, and what products are available for market at particular times.

Padahal jika dihitung bersama, nilainya sangat besar. Data like this matters. Much of the village’s economic strength remains invisible because it is not recorded. When it is not recorded, it is easily assumed to be small. Yet when these activities are counted together, their value can be substantial.

A community market is also connected to food sovereignty. If the village can produce and distribute its own food, dependence on outside markets can be reduced. When chilli prices rise, people who grow their own chilli are in a stronger position. When demand for fish increases ahead of Pengucapan Syukur, community ponds can help meet that need. When rice is harvested, it can first strengthen household food supplies.

Kedaulatan pangan bukan hanya soal memiliki makanan. Food sovereignty is not only about having food. It is also about who controls its production, distribution, and access.

For KUMA, a community market cannot be separated from customary territory. Land, water, gardens, forests, and food sources are the foundation of the Indigenous economy. If customary territory is damaged or lost, the community economy will also weaken. Managing a community market therefore also means protecting the land as the source of production.

KUMA imagines a future in which the village is known not only as a producer of raw materials, but as a centre of community economy with its own products, distribution system, learning spaces, and governance. A small production house. A community kiosk. A network of local buyers. A harvest-recording system. A place where young people can learn that an economy can grow without abandoning the land.

The journey toward that future is still long. Many challenges remain: limited capital, unstable market prices, theft, crop failure, member commitment, and organisational capacity that must continue to grow. But KUMA is not waiting for everything to be perfect before moving forward.

Mereka mulai dari yang ada. Dari kebun kecil. Dari kolam ikan. Dari kandang babi. Dari cabai. Dari jagung. Dari padi. Dari percakapan warga. Dari mapalus. They begin with what they have. From small gardens. From fish ponds. From pig pens. From chilli. From maize. From rice. From conversations among residents. From mapalus.

Because for KUMA Tawaang, the future of the village will not simply arrive from outside. It has to be planted, cared for, harvested, processed, and shared together.
